The $15,000 grant will help address critical gaps in trauma care for foster youth in Sarasota and DeSoto counties.
(January 31, 2025) All Star Children’s Foundation has received a $15,000 grant from Gulf Coast Community Foundation (Gulf Coast) to support a transformative initiative that provides evidence-based, trauma-informed services for children with foster care or child welfare involvement in Sarasota and DeSoto counties, Lakewood Ranch, and Longboat Key. The program will directly address critical gaps in trauma screening and mental health care.
According to All Star CEO Denise Marzullo, the initiative focuses on early identification of trauma-related needs through comprehensive screenings and assessments, ensuring children in the foster care system are connected to the right services at the right time. “These services are essential, as studies reveal that approximately 90% of youth in foster care have experienced significant trauma, often leading to long-term challenges in emotional, behavioral, and cognitive development,” she says.
The program will serve children ages 6 and older, primarily from underserved populations. By utilizing trauma screening and assessment protocols, All Star aims to not only meet state-mandated requirements but also to elevate the standard of care for children in the foster care system.
“Providing timely, evidence-based support for children who have experienced trauma can prevent lasting negative outcomes and set them on a path toward healing and success,” says Marzullo. “This grant allows us to implement best practices that are essential for improving the wellbeing of children in our community.”
Marzullo explains that All Star’s multidisciplinary team of trauma experts will review case records, conduct client satisfaction surveys, and collaborate regularly to refine and optimize the program. This initiative aligns with Florida Senate Bill 1064, which mandates universal trauma screening for children entering foster care.
“With this program, we are committed to bridging the gap in trauma care for foster youth, creating a brighter future for those who need it most,” adds Marzullo.
“We are honored to support All Star Children’s Foundation and the important trauma-informed services they will provide for our community’s children with foster care or child welfare involvement,” said Gulf Coast’s President | CEO Phillip Lanham. “All Star’s mission is to build brighter futures for children in foster care through innovation, science, and compassion. I’ve seen firsthand their powerful impact in providing hope and healing to our residents.”
